Bombardier J. R. Clarke was wounded at the battle of Ulundi on 4 July 1879, where he served in the 10th Battery, 7th Brigade, Royal Artillery, with General Wood’s Flying Column. The 10th Battery comprised two Gatling guns which were placed in the square at Ulundi and did great execution amongst the massed ranks of the Zulus. Four men of the Battery were wounded, including Gunner W. Moorhead who won one of the two Distinguished Conduct Medals awarded for this action.
