Bill Stuart arrived in France on 6 October 1914 as Sergeant-Major 40936, R.F.A., and was commissioned in January 1915. He became Lieutenant in April 1917 and Acting Major, D/77 Brigade R.F.A. in August 1918. Awarded the D.S.O. as Lieutenant (Acting Major) London Gazette 3 June 1919, and mentioned in despatches London Gazette 4 July 1919. He was killed by Arabs on 3 June 1920, when serving in Iraq, attached to the Political Department. Buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq.
