Francis Charles Turner was baptised in Edinburgh in May 1835, son of Major-General W. Turner, C.B, ‘a distinguished officer of the Bengal Army.’ He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and purchased a commission in the 79th Highlanders in July 1852. He purchased his Lieutenancy in June 1854 and served with the 79th in the Crimea, where he was present at the battles of the Alma and Balaklava, the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and the assault of the 8th September. He was promoted Captain in June 1855, and was one of only 8 officers of the regiment who served in the Crimea from the first day to the last. In the Indian Mutiny, he was present at the siege and capture of Lucknow. Turner exchanged into the 39th Regiment in February 1859 and retired when still a Captain in May 1867. He died at Fife Lodge, Staines, on 30 March 1905. Sold with further research.
