Commander Edward Woodville Salisbury was granted his first commission as a Midshipman, June 1902; awarded the Messina Medal whilst serving as a Lieutenant aboard H.M.S. Euryalus in 1908; appointed for Command of armed Launch Miner, Persian Gulf January 1910; after serving for the duration of the Great War he was placed on the retired list, 20 January 1921with the rank of Commander; service papers note ‘volunteered for service in China, 26 January 1927’; recalled for duty at the beginning of the Second World War; after a period of working on censorship duties he put in a request for a more active appointment; appointed to H.M.S. Nile with rank of Commander as a Disembarkation Officer; service papers confirm ‘killed in action 25 May 1941.’

The vendor states that Salisbury was killed in action during an enemy air attack on Suda Bay, Crete. Sold with copied service papers and C.W.G.C. details confirming that he has no known grave and is commemorated by name on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
