Archbishops of Canterbury, Æthelheard (792-805), Penny, third issue (c. 796-8), without King’s name, ÆTHILHEARD A-R, EP in centre, rev. small cross with pellet in each angle, EA DG ·A· ·R· between limbs of long cross, 1.30g/1h (Chick, SNC July 1992, p.188, fig. 1, same dies; BLS –; N 231/1; S 885A). Slightly creased, a surface crack on the reverse and a small edge chip, otherwise nearly very fine, extremely rare; probably only four or five known £1,500-2,000

Discussed at length by Derek Chick in SNC July 1992, this intermediate issue represents a brief coinage by the archbishop’s moneyer at Canterbury during the insurrection in Kent under Eadberht Praen against the royal house of Mercia. Apart from the publication coin, two further specimens are listed on EMC, one of which is no more than a large fragment
