Victoria (1837-1901), A large and finely carved dated shell cameo of St George and the dragon, 1887, for the reverse of the Jubilee Head gold coinage. Extremely fine and a very impressive association item £800-1,200

The dies for the 1887 coinage were engraved by L.C. Wyon and based on designs by J.E. Boehm and B. Pistrucci. Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon was re-introduced on the gold coinage of Victoria in 1871 with dies engraved by L.C. Wyon, who subsequently produced pattern coinage designs of it in the 1870s and 1880s (Forrer, BDM VI, pp.620-2). The cameo represents a direct reference to the introduction of the new gold coinage in 1887
