John Clarke was born in Bishop Stortford, Herefordshire. An Agricultural Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the 5th Foot on 23 January 1868. He was transferred to the 46th Foot in March 1869 and served in Bermuda, October 1876-February 1880; Gibraltar, February 1880-July 1882; Malta, July 1882, and Egypt, July 1882-June 1886. He was discharged at the termination of his second period of limited engagement on 26 January 1889. With copied service papers.
