Edward Cheston, who was born in Co. Tipperary, enlisted in the 41st Foot in November 1822, and served with the Colours for 21 years, including overseas postings ‘in the East Indies, Scinde and Afghanistan’, for which latter theatre of war he received the Medal (his service record confirms). As also verified by the latter source, he was wounded by a gunshot in the left arm during the Ava operations of December 1825. Cheston was finally discharged as a Corporal in August 1846.
