George Wilson was born in London and enlisted in the 6th Regiment in September 1861, aged 19 years. Advanced to Corporal in January 1843 and to Sergeant in January 1845, he served in the Cape of Good Hope for 11 years, and was actively engaged in the operations of 1846-47 and 1850-53 (Medal). Having then been appointed Hospital Sergeant, he was employed in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny (Medal), and gained advancement to Colour-Sergeant in April 1860. He was finally discharged in September 1862, in the rank of Quarter-Master-Sergeant.
