John Henry Bennett, who first entered the French theatre of war in March 1915, was killed in action on the Somme on 8 August 1918, while serving in the 1/7th Battalion, London Regiment. On that date, his unit advanced in a heavy mist to capture Mallard Wood, amidst much opposition, the start of three days of heavy fighting in which the 1/7th’s casualties totalled 12 officers and 300 other ranks. Bennett has no known grave and is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial; sold with a full account of the action from the Battalion’s war diary.
