John Campbell, who was born in Montreal in March 1915, joined the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa in May 1931 and was still serving in that capacity at the outbreak of hostilities in September 1939, when he was drafted to the Canadian Active Service Force. Subsequently embarked for the U.K., he chiefly served as a Regimental and Physical Training Instructor but he went out to France in August 1944, and no doubt shared in some of his regiment’s battle honours. Having then been invalided home with a broken hip, he remained in the Canadian Army right up until his death in 1966. His service record - copies included - notes his Efficiency Medal was awarded in December 1942.
