Gurbaksh Singh Chawla was born on 5 May 1893. He served in the ranks of the Indian Army, September 1918-January 1919 and April-August 1919. He received his medical training at St. Andrews, gaining the M.B., Ch.B. in 1923. Appointed a Temporary Lieutenant in the Indian Medical Service, August 1924; Lieutenant, May 1925; Captain, August 1927; Major, February 1934 and attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in February 1944.
