Donald McDonald was born in Lochalan, Dingwall, Rosshire. A Clerk by occupation, he attested for service in the 61st Brigade at Dublin on 3 July 1878, aged 24 years, 9 months. Posted to the 2nd Battalion 21st Foot, he served in South Africa, February 1879-February 1880, for which service he was awarded the Queen’s Medal with clasp. He was discharged on the termination of his second period of engagement on 10 July 1899. With copied service papers.
