Arthur Spurgeon was born in Norwich. A Tailor by occupation, he attested for the 31st Brigade Depot at Great Yarmouth on 13 February 1877, aged 18 years, 2 months. Posted to the 78th Highlanders in October 1878, he served with them in India, February 1879-August 1880; Afghanistan, August 1880-May 1881; and India, May 1881-November 1889. For his services he was awarded the Afghanistan Medal without clasp and India General Service Medal with clasp, ‘Hazara 1888’. Spurgeon was discharged at his own request on 14 September 1895. He died in Norwich on 2 December 1938, aged 78 years. With copied service papers and death certificate.
