Hong Kong Plague 1894, 1 unofficial engraved slip-on clasp, Tah Ping Chang (Private J. Whitney, S.L.I.) silver issue, good very fine £1200-1500

‘Tah Ping Chang’ is a corruption of ‘Taipingshan’, a district situated in the western half of the City of Victoria on Hong Kong Island. Much of the district was known for its primitive, crowded and unsanitary living conditions - which proved to be the ideal breeding ground for the plague. The medal to ‘Whitney’ is illustrated in The Whitewash Brigade.
