Harry Edmund Caunter was born on 21 July 1898. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on the Unattached List on 30 January 1917 and transferred to the Indian Army in the following month. Employed as an Acting Captain, July 1917-April 1918, he was promoted to Lieutenant in January 1918 and Captain in January 1921.
