John Rorie was commissioned an Assistant Surgeon in the Royal Navy in 1849. During the Crimea War he served aboard H.M.S. Queen. He was present during the bombardment of Fort Constantine in October 1854; he then served ashore with the Naval Brigade. Rorie was promoted to Surgeon in 1858; Staff Surgeon in 1871; Fleet Surgeon in 1880, and Deputy Inspector of Hospitals and Fleets in 1882. He retired from the service in 1882 and died in 1898
