Pair: Private R. Martlew, West Yorkshire Regiment, killed in action at Lake Chrissie in February 1901

Ashanti Star 1896 (3328 L. Cpl. R. Martlew, 2 W. Yorks. R.); Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 5 clasps, Tugela Heights, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal, Laing’s Nek (3328 Pte. R. Martlew, W. Yorkshire Regt.) together with a large white silk ribbon commemorating the Relief of Ladysmith by the 2nd West Yorks and General Clery’s Division, 28 February 1900, the first polished, nearly very fine, the second extremely fine (3) £700-800

Private R. Martlew was killed in action at Lake Chrissie on 6 February 1901, in a heavy attack by a big force under Botha at Bothwell, near Lake Chrissie. On that occasion the West Yorks had extremely hard fighting, and lost 19 men killed and 7 wounded. Sergeant W. B. Traynor was awarded the Victoria Cross for bringing in a wounded comrade, after he himself had been wounded, and then returning to the command of his section.
