John Frederick Simmonds was born in Wellington, Shropshire on 3 June 1887. A Shipwright’s Apprentice by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in July 1903, being advanced to Boy 1st Class in February 1904. He was rated an Ordinary Seaman in June 1905 when on Britannia and an Able Seaman in December 1906 when on Isis. Based at Vivid II he was promoted to Leading Seaman in August 1913 and attained the rank of Petty Officer in March 1917 when on Valiant. He ended the war on the destroyer Starfish based at Dido. With copied service papers.
