M.C. London Gazette 22 June 1918. ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. It was decided to salve a large quantity of ammunition from an evacuated Battery position, which was but a few hundred yards from the enemy’s lines. He was in charge of the party detailed to perform this task, and although the position was inaccessible by road and the party was shelled intermittently for six hours, the salvage of 800 rounds was successfully completed before dawn, thanks to his initiative, energy and utter disregard of danger’.
