A Malaya Operations M.M. group of three awarded to Captain Tejbahadur Gurung, 2nd Gurkha Rifles

Recommendation: ‘Sjt. Tejbahadur Gurung is a platoon serjeant in SP Company. During the present operations in South Johore he has excelled himself commanding a platoon on independent tasks. He has displayed outstanding qualities of leadership throughout. On the first occasion he was ordered to locate a hut which had been spotted from the air 6 miles inside the jungle. He led his platoon on a compass bearing through dense jungle and without guides, found the hut, quickly surrounded it, taking advantage of the heavy rain to deaden noise, and surprised an armed bandit. The information learnt as a result of this capture enabled his company to kill six bandits two days later.

In January 1951 when traces of the bandits in the area had been lost, Sjt. Tejbahadur was ordered to lead out a patrol to locate them. By skilful use of local information he correctly appreciated their likely movements and by tracing the tracks leading out of a food growing area, came upon a large new camp; following on he found a large bandit training camp. An engagement ensued but the bandits fled. After following their tracks for several days local floods prevented further pursuit.

These and other enterprises are typical of the manner in which this NCO has zealously carried out his duties and set a high standard of discipline and leadership under difficult conditions.’

Tejbahadur Gurung was promoted to Lieutenant (London Gazette 22 June 1956) and then to Captain (London Gazette 1 October 1960). Captain Gurung retired from the Army on 15 December 1965.
