Robert Todd Muir served in the 2nd Infantry from 1 November 1914, including the campaign in German S.W. Africa. He was discharged on 31 July 1915. Muir then attested for the 7th South African Infantry on 11 December 1915. He was promoted to Corporal in January 1916. Serving in German East Africa, Muir was wounded in action, receiving a severe gunshot wound to the face, on 11 March 1916. Nevertheless he returned to duty on 22 April 1916. After contracting dysentery, Muir returned to South Africa in December 1916 and was discharged as ‘unfit for war service’ on 7 April 1917.
