George Duff was born in Camberwell, London. An Engineer by occupation, he attested for the East Kent Regiment at London on 6 April 1898, aged 21 years. He was transferred to the Army Ordnance Corps on 4 August 1899. With them he served in South Africa, January 1900-June 1902 and Gibraltar, September 1904-October 1909. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in March 1912 and Warrant Officer Class 2 (Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant) in October 1914. Duff served in Singapore, October 1912-July 1917, during which time he served against the mutineers, February-March 1915 - this being noted on his service papers. Duff was promoted to Acting Warrant Officer Class 1 (Sub Conductor) in July 1918 and Warrant Officer Class 1 (Sub Conductor) in April 1919. By the Army Order No. 333 of October 1916 he was awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. He was mentioned in W.O. List of 25 March 1919 for “valuable service rendered in connection with the War’.
