John Martin served in the South African Engineer Corps, No.9 Troop, 29 March-30 April 1915. He then transferred to the Railway Regiment, 1 May-4 November 1915, and thence the Water Supply Corps, from 28 November 1916. He served with them in German East Africa, January-March 1917. Suffering from Malarial Fever, Martin returned to South Africa on 7 March 1917 and was discharged as ‘permanently unfit for service in German East Africa on 23 September 1917. Martin then attested for the S.A.N.L.C. on 4 October 1917 and entered France on 16 November 1917, serving as a Lance-Sergeant with 36th Company S.A.N.L.C. He was later returned to South Africa and was discharged due to demobilisation on 25 September 1918. With copied service papers.
