John Buchan Powell was born in Cardiganshire. A Mining Engineer by occupation, he attested for short service with the Imperial Yeomanry at Doncaster on 25 February 1900. With the 66th Company Imperial Yeomanry, he served in South Africa, 13 March 1900-17 June 1901. He was discharged having completed his period of service, on 24 June 1901. For his services he was awarded the Queen’s medal with four clasps (also entitled to ‘South Africa 1901’) and the Yorkshire Imperial Yeomanry Medal. Powell served in the Great War with the Northern Rhodesian Rifles, serving in East Africa, 2 February 1915-19 February 1916. With copied service papers, roll extracts and m.i.c.
