Robert Erskine Christie was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. During the Boer War he served in the South African Constabulary. In the Great War he served with the Ermelo Commando, 14 October-13 December 1914, and 12 January-30 June 1915, seeing service in the German South West Africa Campaign. Christie attested for the 4th South African Infantry on 10 December 1915 and entered France on 12 July 1916. Promoted to Lance-Corporal on 24 April 1917, he was wounded in action on 8 May 1917, suffering a gunshot wound to the right clavicle/upper chest. He was treated at the South African Hospital at Richmond from which he was discharged on 25 August 1917. Returning to active service in France/Flanders, he was killed in action on 11 April 1918, aged 34 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
