James Oswald Nott was born in Eastern Natal and was an Electrician by occupation. He served in the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry (Transvaal Scottish) between 18 August 1914 and 14 August 1915 and saw service in the campaign in German South West Africa ranked as a Serjeant. On 3 December 1915 he attested for the 7th South African Infantry and the day after was promoted to Serjeant. With his unit he served in German East Africa, 15 January 1916-13 February 1918. He was discharged as ‘permanently unfit for tropical service, temporarily unfit for non-tropical service’ on 27 March 1918. Nott rejoined the Transvaal Scottish on 10 June 1918 and was commissioned a Lieutenant on 22 September 1923. He was awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Force L.S. Medal on 13 August 1926 (Government Gazette 20 August 1926). Lieutenant Nott was struck off the strength of the Transvaal Scottish on 25 July 1927. With copied service papers.
