James Midgley was born in New Zealand on 14 February 1893. A Carpenter by occupation, he attested for the 1st Battalion Wellington Infantry Regiment on 18 August 1914. Midgley sailed with his battalion on 15 October 1914 and arrived in Egypt on 4 December 1914. He embarked for the Dardanelles on 12 April 1915. He was wounded in action during the fighting on Gallipoli, 7 August 1915 and was admitted to a clearing station on Mudros on 23 August and evacuated to England on 25 November, being admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, on 5 December. Recovering, he returned to his unit, then in France, on 8 June 1916. Midgley was killed in action on 16 September 1916. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Caterpillar Valley (New Zealand) Memorial. He was the husband of Elizabeth Wright (formerly Midgley), of 49 Creswell Road, Twickenham, England.
