Percival Lionel Wilson Steele served in the Rand Rifles, 15 October 1914-28 July 1915, seeing service in German South West Africa. In January 1916 he attested for the Machine Gun Section, 1st Mounted Brigade, attached to the 2nd South African Horse. With the 2nd S.A.H. he served in British East Africa, March-December 1916. Returning to South Africa he was demobilised on 27 February 1917. He then attested for the South African Service Corps - Mechanical Transport on 30 April 1917 but was discharged as temporarily unfit for non-tropical service on 10 November 1917. On 8 April 1918 he re-attested, this time into the 1st South African Infantry Brigade. Landing in England on 5 June 1918, he entered France on 26 August and joined the 4th South African Infantry shortly thereafter. On 8 October 1918 he was dangerously wounded, receiving a gunshot wound to the back. Admitted to No. 12 General Hospital, Rouen, he died of his wounds on 17 October 1918. Private Steele was buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen. With identity disk and copied service papers and other research.
