William Webb was born in Kennington, London, on 16 January 1899. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 23 April 1911 and was ranked as a Signal Boy in October 1914 when based on Ganges. After service at Vivid I, January-March 1915, he was posted to the battleship Warspite, April 1915-July 1916, serving on her at the battle of Jutland - the ship being heavily involved in the action. Webb was promoted to Ordinary Signalman in January 1917 when at Vivid I and Signalman in January 1918 when on Eaglet/Dove. He was discharged on 26 March 1920 and soon after joined the Royal Fleet Reserve. With copied service paper.
