Frank Charman was born in Redditch, Worcestershire, on 1 January 1890. A Needle Grinder by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 5 September 1910 and was advanced to Stoker 1st Class in September 1911. With the onset of War he was serving on the pre-dreadnought battleship Queen, June 1914-May 1916; the ship forming part of the 5th Battle Squadron of the Channel Fleet during 1914/ early 1915, and then forming part of the battleship force for the Dardanelles campaign. In May 1916 whilst on the Queen he was promoted to Leading Stoker. His next service at sea was on the escort sloop/‘Q-Ship’ ‘Q-10’ Begonia, August 1916-September 1917. He was fortunate to leave the vessel when he did as she was sunk with all hands, in collision with the U.151, off Casablanca, on 2 October 1917. After a short period on the battleship Emperor of India, November 1917, he was ‘loaned’ to the Royal Australian Navy, serving on the cruiser Sydney, November 1917-September 1919 and the battle-cruiser Australia, September 1919-September 1920. During this time he was promoted to Stoker Petty Officer, 2 September 1920. Reverting back to the Royal Navy in September 1920, he was released from service on 8 June 1922.
