James Greenwood of Ferrybridge, South Yorkshire, was a ship’s master from 1907. His first command was the S.S. Ripingham in 1908. Greenwood continued to serve at sea until 8 September 1928 when he died while in command of the collier S.S. Broomfleet (The vessel was subsequently lost with all hands on or about 13 December 1933). His Great War trio was authorised on a medal roll dated 17 May 1923, where Greenwood is listed as a ‘Civilian Master Y.C.’ - the Y.C. being an abbreviation for ‘Yard Craft’. The trio is one of about 80 issued by the Royal Navy to civilians and so named. With copied research.
