John Lindley Ray was born on 9 July 1864 and was educated at Norwich Grammar School. Employed as a Farmer in British East Africa, Ray claimed to have attested into ‘B’ Squadron, East African Mounted Rifles in August 1914 but is shown as enlisting on 15 February 1915. He was discharged on 3 September 1915 in order to take over two farms in British East Africa. Ray returned to England in 1918 and became an officer cadet. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps on 27 July 1918. As such he served in Egypt, 12 September 1918-16 April 1919. Ray then served in the North Russian campaign, 13 July-6 October 1919. He was demobilised on 22 November 1919. With copied service papers, m.i.c. and roll extracts.
