Herbert Edward Mundy was born in Bristol, England. Employed as a Stockman employed in Australia, he attested for service abroad with the Australian Imperial Force at Guildford, Western Australia on 19 October 1914, aged 22 years. With the 10th Light Horse he entered the Egypt theatre of war on 9 March 1915 and then landed at Gallipoli on 21 May 1915, being transferred to the Machine Gun Section in June. On 15 July 1915 he reported ill with influenza and was invalided to Malta, 28 July-20 August 1915. Recovering, he returned to his unit at Gallipoli, 9 September-26 December 1915 after which the unit returned to Egypt. Promoted Driver on 24 February 1916, Mundy was transferred to the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Machine Gun Squadron upon the formation of that unit in July 1916 and continued to serve with the Machine Gun Squadron for the remainder of the war. He was promoted Lance-Corporal on 1 March 1919, sailed for England in May 1919 and then for Australia in September 1919, being finally discharged on 6 December 1919. With copied service papers. A note with the lot indicates that Mundy was wounded by shrapnel in Gallipoli on 18 June 1915 but this is not recorded in his service papers.
