Arthur Daniel Sutton, a Drover from Waipawa, was attested into the Wellington Infantry Regiment on 18 August 1914, aged 34 years, two months. He was a member of the 17th Company when he sailed with the ‘main body’ of his regiment, arriving at Alexandria on 4 December 1914. He embarked for the Dardanelles on 12 April 1915 and participated in the landing on 25 April 1915. Private Sutton was wounded in action on 8 May 1915, suffering a gunshot wound to his right calf. As a result he was invalided to Alexandria and thence to England and on to New Zealand. Sutton arrived back in New Zealand on 29 September 1916 and was discharged as ‘no longer physically fit for war service on account of wounds received in action’ on 6 November 1916.
