Herbert J. Dewling enlisted into the Royal Newfoundland Regiment at St. John’s, Newfoundland, on 2 September 1914, aged 23 years. He was promoted to Lance-Corporal on 28 July 1915. Posted to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, he landed at Sulva Bay, Gallipoli, on 20 September 1915. Evacuated sick, suffering from dysentry on 23 September, he was invalided to the 15th General Hospital, Alexandria on 26 September 1915, being discharged on 25 October. He rejoined his battalion in France as an Acting Serjeant in March 1916 and in April was employed at G.H.Q. but was invalided to England in December the same year. Returning to France, he was posted to the 3rd Echelon in September 1917 and was promoted Orderly Room Serjeant in October 1917 but was again invalided to England in July 1918. Returning to France and posted to the 3rd Echelon in September 1918, he rejoined the 1st Battalion Newfoundland Regiment in April 1919. As an Acting Staff Sergeant, Dewling was demobilised in England on 24 June 1919. With copied service papers.
