William Alfred Kirker, from Kilburn, Wellington, served with ‘D’ Reserve Battery, New Zealand Field Artillery before the war. He was mobilised on 8 August 1914, and served as Corporal in the Samoan Expeditionary Force when it left New Zealand on 11 August 1914. Kirker was discharged at his own request on 22 March 1915. He re-enlisted into the New Zealand Field Artillery on 7 September 1915 and was promoted to Serjeant on 16 October 1915. He sailed for Egypt and landed at Suez on 14 February 1916. Kirker joined the 8th Battery, N.Z.F.A. and reverted to the rank of Gunner on 9 March 1916. He was appointed an Acting Corporal on 16 March upon joining the 9th Battery and Temporary Corporal on 24 March. He embarked for France on 7 April but on 26 April was reduced to the rank of Gunner for ‘inefficiency’. Gunner Kirker was wounded in action on 11 September 1917, receiving a severe gunshot wound to the left shoulder. He was invalided to England and thence to New Zealand. Kirker was discharged on 30 April 1918. He died on 19 December 1969. With copied service papers.
