Archibald Brookfield Neale was born in Oxfordshire, England. A Civil Servant by occupation, he attested for the South African Irish on 29 September 1914 and was promoted to Corporal in October 1914 and Serjeant in December 1914. He was discharged on 23 July 1915. He had previously served two years, six months in the Oxford Imperial Yeomanry and 5 months in the Lancashire and Yorkshire Contingent during the 1906 Zulu Rebellion. Neale re-attested for the 3rd South African Infantry at Potchefstroom on 18 August 1915 and embarked for England on 19 October 1915. With the 3rd S.A.I. he served in France, 7 August 1916-23 March 1917, returning to South Africa on 16 November 1917, having been gassed and suffering from chronic bronchitis. Neale was discharged as permanently unfit for general war service on 22 December 1917. Neale attested for the ‘Returned Soldier’s Battalion No. 1’ in March 1919, being discharged, time expired on 31 May 1920. With copied service papers.
