Before the war, Arthur Henry Manning was employed as a Shipping Clerk and and was a member of the Cape Town Highlanders. He was mobilised on 8 August 1914 and served with ‘B’ Company 6th Infantry (Cape Town Highlanders) in German South West Africa, 17 May-12 July 1915; being demobilised on 19 August 1915. He then attested for the 4th South African Infantry on 21 August 1915. Serving in France, he was wounded in action at Delville Wood, 17 July 1916 and was admitted to Abbeville No. 1 South African Hospital with gun shot wounds to his right leg and left arm. As a result his left arm was amputated. He was invalided to England and thence to South Africa and was discharged as medically unfit at Wynberg on 6 September 1917. He was awarded the Silver War Badge and King’s Certificate. With copied service papers.
