Edward Richard Howes attested into No. 4 Troop (Mounted Engineers) of the South African Engineering Corps on 17 February 1915. He served in German South West Africa and was discharged on 31 July 1915. He re-attested on 2 May 1917 as a Sapper (Carpenter) in the South African Mounted Engineers. Serving in East Africa, he was treated for Malaria on five occasions. Howes returned to South Africa on 7 October 1918 having been mentioned in despatches for his services in East Africa. He was admitted to No. 3 General Hospital at Durban on 18 November 1918. He died of Pneumonia on 6 December 1918 and was buried in the Durban (Stellawood) Cemetery, Natal.
