George Forster was appointed from the Supernumerary List, Active Citizen’s Force, as a Lieutenant in the South African Field Telegraph & Postal Corps on 12 March 1915. He was posted to the Southern Command, South African Forces in German S.W. Africa on 6 September 1915. He was then transferred to the 2nd South African Rifles, Signal Company, Wireless Section, on 4 November 1915. He embarked for service with the ‘Union Central African Imperial Service Contingent’ on 29 November 1915. Forster was taken prisoner of war near Lupembe, German East Africa, on 12 November 1916. He rejoined the 2nd South African Rifles for duty on 20 November 1917 having spent nearly a year as a prisoner-of-war. Forster was transferred to the South African Signal Service on 1 January 1918 and reported for duty with the Nyasaland-Rhodesia Field Force on 24 January 1918. His transfer to the S.A. Signal Service was cancelled in April 1918 and he rejoined the 2nd S.A. Rifles. He was based at Zomba, Nyasaland, July 1918-January 1919. Lieutenant Forster was released from service on 5 April 1919.
