M.S.M. London Gazette 12 December 1919. ‘... in recognition of valuable services rendered in connection with the War (for South Africa)’.

Alfred William Mantle was born in the Parish of Limehouse, London. A Fitter by occupation, he attested for service with the Royal Engineers on 12 September 1899. With them he served in Gibraltar, April 1900-December 1904 and in South Africa, December 1910-January 1920. Serving in South Africa, he was promoted to Foreman of Works Staff Sergeant in November 1908 and Foreman of Works Quartermaster Sergeant in November 1914. He served as Acting Division Officer at Wynberg, March 1915-April 1918. Mantle was promoted to Warrant Officer Class 2 in June 1918. He was awarded the Army Long Service Medal with gratuity in Army Orders 305 of October 1918 and for his services in South Africa during the war was awarded the Army Meritorious Service Medal. Mantle was discharged at Chatham on 11 September 1920.

One of only 25 Meritorious Service Medals awarded for war service in South Africa - of these just three were awarded to the Royal Engineers.
