Hearsey Edwin Ghey was born in Bristol, England. A Buyer by occupation, he attested for the 7th South African Infantry at Potchefstroom, on 3 December 1915, aged 40 years. He was transferred to the Machine Gun Section on 15 December. Posted to German East Africa, he was treated for several bouts of illness before returning to South Africa in February 1917. He returned to German East Africa in June 1917 and died of dysentery on 4 August 1917. He was first buried at Matandawallah, German East Africa but after the war his body was re-buried in the Kilwa Kivinje Cemetery, in Lindi Province. Later still, Ghey’s body was re-buried yet again in the Dar-es-Salaam War Cemetery. With copied service papers.
