Andrew Douglas Plain was born in Bloemfontein, Orange Free State. A Plumber by occupation, he attested for the 3rd South African Infantry Brigade, South African Expeditionary Forces, at Potchefstroom on 11 September 1916, aged 19 years. He embarked on 24 October 1916, along with the 5th South African Infantry for Chinde in Portuguese East Africa. Plain was a member of the 5th South African Infantry when it was deployed in Nyasaland in 1916. Qualifying as a machine-gunner in October 1917 and was assigned to the Machine Gun Depot at Limbe. He was attached to the 2nd Cape Corps on 30 July 1917 and to the South African Special Services Company as a Gunner on 1 March 1918. He was invalided on 30 April 1918 having suffered several attacks of malaria since March 1917. In July 1918 he was transferred to the 2/4th Battalion King’s Africa Rifles with the rank of Acting Serjeant. He left Zomba, Nyasaland, for South Africa and medical treatment in August 1918. After treatment for further malaria attacks, he was discharged on 19 February 1919. With copied service papers.
