George Patterson was born in Johannesburg and served with the 1st Field Ambulance, South African Medical Corps, 18 August 1914-18 June 1915, and saw service in German South West Africa. On 29 November 1915 he then attested for the South African Medical Corps, S.A. Expeditionary Force and served in East Africa with the 3rd Field Ambulance, S.A.M.C. Patterson took ill with malaria in early November 1916 and was admitted to a Casualty Clearing Station on 15 November. He was evacuated to Dar
es Salaam on 17 December 1916 and thence to South Africa on 2 January 1917. After recovering, Patterson left South Africa for Nyasaland on 8 August 1917. He returned to South Africa in March 1919 and was discharged on 7 July 1919. For his services in East Africa he was awarded the Military Medal.
Sold with corporal’s cloth chevron; original Certificate of Release from Active Service, June 1915; Release Document, May 1919; 1914-15 Star award certificate; named lids (damaged) of medal card boxes of issue; three photographs of the recipient and one of the hospital at Dar-es-Salaam; together with copied service papers and other research.
