James Pendlebury was born in Portwood, Stockport, Cheshire in December 1894 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class at Vivid in October 1913. His subsequent appointments in the Great War included the armoured cruiser H.M.S. Cumberland (May 1914-October 1916); Vivid (October 1916-April 1918), and Valiant (April 1918-June 1919), while his service papers credit him with being part of the 1914 Cameroon Expeditionary Force. He was demobilised in June 1919, the day after he enrolled into the R.F.R. and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1928. Pendlebury was finally discharged with a gratuity of £100 in 1934; sold with original Certificate of Service in the Royal Navy, Qualifications in Stoker Ratings Certificate and a ‘Rent Act 1957’ Document, on which his address is given as ‘73 Borron Street, Portwood’.
