Michael Browne was born in Stepney, London in December 1889 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in November 1913. By the outbreak of hostilities, he was serving in the armoured cruiser H.M.S. Carnarvon, in which capacity he remained employed until August 1916, thus being present at the battle of the Falklands in December 1914, in addition to gaining advancement to Stoker 1st Class. In that memorable engagement, Carnarvon, in company with the battle cruisers Invincible and Inflexible, engaged and sank the German armoured cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. Coming ashore in August 1916, Browne served for the remainder of the War in Canning, the Orkney Kite Balloon Ship and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in the early 1920s, when serving in the sloop Harebell; sold with copied service record.
