John Coppin was born in the Parish of Cheapside, London, and attested for the 41st Regiment at Arnee, East Indies, on 24 February 1835, aged 16 years 8 months. He was promoted to Drummer in January 1838, to Corporal in November 1850, and to Sergeant and Drum Major on 5 May 1854. He was discharged at Birr on 14 August 1858, suffering from a chronic cough and shortness of breathing, aggravated ‘by the performance of his duty in giving instruction in the Bugle and the Flute; these ailments undoubtedly owe their origin, in part at least, to his duties as Drum Major.’ Sold with copy discharge papers.
