Fraser was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the London Scottish in May 1939 and was serving as an instructor in the 1st Battalion in Kent by early 1940, while from October 1941 to February 1942, he was Adjutant. The Battalion was mobilised in the summer of 1942, and embarked for the Middle East that August, Fraser subsequently witnessing active service in North Africa and Italy, latterly in the rank of Temporary Major and as Company Commander of 168 Infantry Brigade’s Support Company, which had been detached from 56th Division and landed at Anzio - he is several times mentioned in Brigadier Barclay’s history of the London Scottish in the 1939-45 War, and one of his N.C.Os, Sergeant V. B. Fraser, was awarded the M.M.
