McDonell was originally commissioned in the A.T.S. in October 1940, became a Temporary Section Commander in January 1943 and a Major in October 1953. Among other appointments she was acting as second-in-command of Bushfield Camp, near Winchester, in February 1947, and as a Recruiting Officer in Oxford as late as 1958.
